Getting started on Mural Projects!

I recently posted on facebook that I would like to start doing more mural projects. In response, I have two murals lined up!

mural sketches

The mural process begins with sketches…

The first one will be on the back patio wall of a personal residence. Today, I started working on sketching some ideas. I’m thrilled that I have free reign with the designs, because I really want to work on my own style in mural form. I have more freedom with the first mural. The woman I am painting it for is a collector of art in general and my art in particular. I was excited when I made my first site visit to see her tastes are colorful and eclectic. We have very similar taste!

The second mural is at a local high school. My sketches will have to be approved by the Principal. The high school art teacher (a friend of mine) has a general idea that I will be working with. This mural will be a project to create a sanctuary spot on campus for the large population of immigrant and refugee students to feel safe and welcome. The basic idea there is a spiral with different colored hands around it. I am thinking I will turn the spiral into a giant sunflower with the hands in the middle section around the spiral.

Last week, I visited both sites, made some measurements and spoke with the clients about what they wanted. This week I will make several sketches so there are choices to pick from. Once I have approval, I will gather my supplies and get started! I’m unsure if the High School mural will happen this school year or even in the Summer. It may have to wait until school starts back up in the Fall. We are going to include kids in the process which will be fun! I will have a group of young artists to help with the painting once the design has been drawn.

Would you like me to paint a mural for you? Contact me and let’s talk!

Back to Painting

12 x 12" oil painting in progress

12 x 12″ oil painting in progress, still a lot of detail to finish

Working on a new painting this week. Started it last week but haven’t had time for a blog yet! I’ve been helping out a little here and there with the new grand baby, family has always been most important to me! I’m always happy to get back to the studio though. 🙂 I’ve been filming a time lapse of this painting in progress, you can see sections of the video on my Instagram.

I’ve been thinking about painting large again, only REALLY large, like wall/mural size. Signs seem to keep pointing me in that direction anyway. I was recently sent a link for a local public art project. The project is a huge mural wall and while I would love to submit for the job, I don’t have the portfolio of work to show to get a job like that. It came to me during my morning meditation that I should look for some mural jobs I could do to add to my portfolio. I did a mural years ago at a local church, not exactly what I would usually  paint, but it was good experience and taught me a lot about painting on walls outside!

What I’ve decided to do is offer to paint a mural for anyone locally who has a wall they want painted. For the cost of materials only. I will not charge labor for the first couple I do. I already have one possibly lined up, so I’m looking for one more wall in need of a mural. Please get in touch with me if you are interested. You can email me at plewis11@comcast.net, or send me a facebook message on my facebook art page.

More Video Progress

Getting back to painting after our trip to Austin last week. Sunlight played on Saturday night for our first gig in Austin! We had so much fun and cannot wait to go back again in March!

Meanwhile, back in my studio, I’m working on the last painting for my new portfolio. This is the portfolio I will soon be shopping around to galleries and other art showing venues. This is a short video of some progress I made today. This painting is just about complete, only a few more minor touches.

Once this one is done I will get back to the painting video series I started about a month ago. This series will be painted on 12 x 12″ canvases and each painting will be filmed in a time lapse format. Each painting will be named after a song from our first Sunlight CD and will have each song as background music for the video. The first video was “Moon Circles”.

Not sure just yet which one I will do next. It often depends on my mood when I start a painting. Music is always a part of my painting routine. Honestly, I have never painted without listening to music and I probably never will. I had been searching for a way to tie the two together and this is the series I came up with. Stay tuned for more soon!

Reminder for my local followers/friends, my studio will be open this Saturday for our monthly Open Studios event here at Chroma Studios! Noon-5pm are the hours. Drop by and say hi! I would love to see you!

One more reminder, I am having a studio clearance sale in my Etsy shop for a limited time only! It could end tomorrow, it could end January 1st! I’m not telling, so check it out now! Lots of original art for up to 60% off. I will be posting some prints for sale today too. Lots of great gifts for the art lover on your list! 😉 If you come by my Open Studio this Saturday you will even get an extra gift for purchasing an original painting!

Birthday Week!

Tuesday was my birthday, not saying how old I am! Let’s just say I’m not a Spring chicken anymore! Not a winter chicken either, but somewhere in between. They say age is just a number and I live by that mantra! I’m enjoying my life more now than at any other time in my life. I haven’t spent much time in the studio this week, we went for a ride on the Sandia Tramway on Tuesday evening and have been sleeping in everyday. It IS my week after all!

Current work in progress, 24 x 30" oil on canvas

Current work in progress, 24 x 30″ oil on canvas

I have done a bit more painting on my current work in progress. This is a larger canvas than I’ve been painting lately. A friend gave me the canvas and so I figured I may as well put it to good use (Thanks Stephanie!). This one is an 24 x 30″ oil on canvas. (Darn it! I just cut my finger on the tape measure!) It’s getting very close to completion!

I’m working on updating my portfolio and this means I have several older paintings to clear out of my studio. Check out my Etsy shop for some really great sale prices on some great art! 😉 I will be adding more paintings in the coming days and weeks.

Today I will start my next painting video! I’m working on a series of 12 x 12″ oils on canvas  that will be made into a video series. Each painting will be named after a song on our Sunlight CD, Life is Good. The corresponding song will provide the background music for the video as well. I hope you will check back in with my blog, or better yet, subscribe so you can get an email when I post the next video!

Speaking of Sunlight, we have jumped back into playing live shows again after a 2 year hiatus for recording. This weekend we are playing a house concert at our own house in Albuquerque. Our friend, Alison Reynolds, is coming up from Las Cruces to play a set and some songs with Sunlight! On November 12th we are playing in Austin, Texas at the Carousel Lounge! Our first gig in Austin, so exciting! In December, we are traveling to Arizona and have shows in both Phoenix and Tucson. Click the “live shows” link above to see where and when we are playing next! 🙂 Our next local show is December 14th in Rio Rancho. We hope to finish our 2nd album of original music by the beginning of 2017! Stay tuned for more and thank you for visiting my blog! 🙂

Creativity: “Shining Your Light”

Aaron and I took Friday and Monday off to make this past weekend a long one. I guess I should say we took the days off from our studios. We worked our butts off at the house! We are currently getting our house ready to sell. This past weekend was focused on yard work and filling a big hole in the back yard where our root cellar used to be. Hauling wheelbarrows full of dirt from the front yard to the back corner of the back yard was exhausting! We moved just over a ton of dirt on Saturday morning. Plus I weeded the front yard while Aaron was picking up the load of dirt. These things used to be so much easier in our younger years! We spent yesterday taking the poor neglected puppies for a hike in the Sandias. It was a good 3 hour hike!

Shining Your Light 10 x 8" original oil painting on canvas

So, back to my regularly scheduled blog post! Thursday afternoon I finished the painting I posted about in my last post. “Shining Your Light” is about lighting up yours and others lives with your own inner light. We all have it, that inner light that shines through us when we smile or show love to someone. There may be turmoil in our lives, but if we can remember to shine our light, the turmoil will subside and the joy will shine through!

"Awakening", 48 x 48" oil painting on canvas, Artist's collection

“Awakening”, 48 x 48″ oil painting on canvas, Artist’s collection

This little painting was inspired by a large painting I did many years ago. “Awakening” hangs on the wall in my bedroom. It’s the first thing I see every morning when I wake up. It’s a 48 x 48″ painting that will most likely never be sold. It will stay a part of my own personal collection.

The reason? I painted this painting at a very difficult time in my life, yet at the same time, it was a time of huge growth and discovery for me. It was almost a year after my dad passed away, 2009. At the time I painted it I was reading Eckhart Tolle’s book, A New Earth. In the book he talks about “awakening”. Which is where the title of this painting came from. I’ve since read it a couple more times. It’s one of those deeply spiritual books that I like to read over and over because of it’s truth. Awakening is basically when you get to that point in life where you realized you are a spiritual being having a human experience and not the other way around.

My dad’s death was the catalyst for my own awakening. I finally KNEW deep down inside that there IS something after death. Death is not the end of our spirit, it is the end of our physical body’s existence here in the physical plane.

Last week, I woke up and looked at “Awakening” and realized how far I have come since I painted it and how much my art has changed. I felt that I hadn’t completely explored the ideas in this painting and I needed to revisit them again. Not always easy to do 7 years later, but beneficial just the same. I may just stay on this narrow, winding path for a few more paintings. Who knows what will come of it! Stay tuned…

“Forgiveness” in progress and this week’s art auction

original pencil acrylic painting on canvas board flower spiral

"Where Flowers Bloom...", 8 x 8" pencil and acrylic on canvas board, starting bid $9.99

Above is this week’s art auction, “Where Flowers Bloom…”. As always, starting bid is $9.99.

Currently working on a large (24 x 36″) painting called “Forgiveness”. It’s been a while since I painted in the rectangular format, but I figured it was about time. Plus, I had the canvas lying around. Here are a few progress pics showing a few stages along the way, including details.
