Memorial Day, Murals and Guitars

I hope everyone had a good Holiday weekend. I’m working through it so we can go camping this week. We always go camping the week AFTER Memorial day. We are the kind of campers that want to get away from everyone! Even in New Mexico, that is impossible to do Memorial Day weekend, so we wait until Tuesday when everyone else is back at work.

I’m writing this blog ON Memorial Day and remembering all the brave men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country. I was in the military during Desert Storm and personally knew a few of those people. I will never forget them, their sacrifice or the families they left behind.

Over the weekend, I started my guitar painting for the Sierra Club show in August. I’ve had this Strat body sitting in my studio for literally YEARS! It has been patiently waiting for me to make it beautiful. It is still in progress and I’m hoping to make this one my first playable guitar painting. I’m counting on my husband to help me with building the guitar from the empty solid body it is now. I’m showing only recycled art at the Sierra Club, because what better place to promote recycling, right?

On Friday, I will be getting started on the mural project I’ve been writing about for the last couple months. I have created the design and have approval to get started! I’m really excited about painting LARGE! 10 x 10 feet large! I plan on making a time lapse video of the whole process so stay tuned. I may share bits and pieces of it during the process.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you all enjoyed your Holidays. I really did enjoy all the time spent with my family in 2016. We also had a really fun and successful mini-tour to Arizona with our music. Sunlight performed in Phoenix, Tucson and Ajo, AZ and we were very grateful for the turnout and CD sales!

While in southern Arizona, we visited the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. It was awesome to see all the huge cacti! Saguaros and Organ Pipe Cactus were everywhere. We took a short hike, but it was quite cold while we were there. Of course, it warmed up into the 70s on the day we left.

We made a very quick trip down to Mexico for dinner one of the days we were visiting in Ajo. It was supposed to be a full day trip, but my sweetie woke up sick that day and ended up sleeping until 3 in the afternoon. Once he got up, we decided to go for it and drove down to Puerto Penasco for a wonderful dinner by the sea! The food was great, even if the weather was COLD and windy. Our waiter was awesome and brought us our own personal heater. We practiced our Espanol with him and he practiced his English with us. Other than the trucks of soldiers riding around with automatic weapons, nothing was out of the ordinary. I guess the soldiers were there to protect the tourists. Like I said, nothing out of the ordinary!

I saw my first live Javelina while we were in Ajo! Apparently, they are regular visitors to the dumpster there. I only got one photo of one of them, but at night we were surrounded in our car by a herd/pack? of them! It was quite interesting, like watching a nature show in person! haha!

Our dear, sweet Raven. May she RIP :(

Our dear, sweet Raven. May she RIP 😦

We arrived home in Albuquerque just in time for Christmas and spent several great days hanging out with our kids, siblings and parents. Only one day was a sad day, as we had to have one of our fur babies put down at the end of the year. She was old and sick, but Raven will be greatly missed! She was a great dog. ❤

The last week of the year I was asked to create a coloring page for a new local quarterly paper. The Chronicle is New Mexico’s Cannabis Magazine. I created a Cannabis Mandala coloring page for the first issue of 2017. It was quick and fun, check out their website for more information.

The Best Laid Plans…

Current work in progress, 12 x 12" oil on canvas

Current work in progress, 12 x 12″ oil on canvas

Our plans don’t always play out the way we wish they would. I’m learning my lesson, to go with the flow! We decided yesterday to take our house off the market. We gave up. I don’t feel like we failed. Sure, our plans didn’t go as we had hoped. Our house didn’t sell and that is ok. Sometimes the Universe has other plans for us. We thought it was time for us to leave the big house behind and become gypsies. We thought we really wanted that to happen. I’m starting to see that it just wasn’t meant to be. How else can I look at it? I can’t change the facts. We still plan to do lots of traveling, but it will be a bit different than the way we envisioned it.

We’ve decided it’s time to expand our business here in Albuquerque and that can’t be done if we are out of town all the time. For whatever reason, our work in Albuquerque is not yet done. Our business, Chroma Studios, has now been operating for almost 9 years. During this time we have leased our spaces and have paid a LOT of money out in rent. Our long term lease is up next year, so we are working on purchasing our own building. This will be no small accomplishment! We have a TON of work ahead of us for this to happen. We have met with a S.C.O.R.E. mentor and started our business plan. We have a lot of fundraising to do! I guess it’s a good thing we will be around a bit longer!

Then there are the personal reasons, our first grandson is due to be born January 20th. We found this out AFTER we made our plans. Like I said before, I guess the Universe had other plans for us!

The painting above is my next painting video in progress! This time I decided to only share still photos until the video is completed. Stay tuned for the completed video sometime next week.

Needless to say, this week is Thanksgiving, so I won’t be here in the studio all week. May you all have a lovely holiday and hopefully there will be minimal family disagreements around your table as well as mine! No doubt your family is like mine and has many differing political views! Pray for peace! 😉

Support Living Artists! Please! :)

We’ve all heard the myth of the starving artist, but I’m here to say it’s just that, a myth! Artists can and DO make a living with their creativity. I am living proof of that. However, that said, we could still use a bit of support now and then! I hate to toot my own horn but we are getting close to that most wonderful time of the year and mama needs a new pair of shoes! LITERALLY! After all the hiking and walking we did during our recent travels, my shoes have holes in the soles!

What better way to say, I love you, than with something handmade! I ask you to support small businesses and creative people this Holiday season. Don’t give your hard earned money to the big box stores! PLEASE! Keep it local and when you can’t do that, support LIVING artists! We are all local to somewhere! 🙂

I have a few artist friends that would probably appreciate the support so close to the holidays. Here is a list of some of my favorites and of course, there is also MY ETSY SHOP, with lots of colorful prints and paintings!

Cari Pier, of Sea Dream Art, makes lovely paintings and prints of her inspiring art. She is not only a great friend but her work inspires me to keep going! 🙂

Elayne Russell, of MoonGipies, makes all kinds of whimsical recycled items and is a great photographer. She is another wonderful friend of mine!

William Reichard, is a fresh, new author with a brand new work of fiction for the bookworm on your list! You can find his book, This Album Full of Angles on Amazon.com in both kindle and paperback. Will is another friend and inspiration with his positive attitude and love for the written word.

Susan See, of Susan See Photography, has a great eye and I just adore her photography! She has inspired me recently with a move from Albuquerque to the midwest.

Last but definitely not least, my husband, guitarist extraordinaire, Aaron Lewis! He has several CDs of beautiful guitar music available and you can find him on iTunes and CDBaby.

Happy New Year!

2012 is almost behind us! It’s been a wonderful year and I hope everyone has an even better year in 2013! Lots of exciting stuff coming up for me and my sweetie in the coming months. I promise to get back to blogging more regularly in the coming weeks. More music, art, love and joy coming soon! Until then, enjoy your family and friends and never take anything or anyone for granted. Be grateful for all the blessings and learn from the bad which is really just lessons/blessings in disguise! I am so very grateful for the good, the bad and everything in between. Nothing more exciting than a New Year ahead, a fresh slate to start over at the beginning! Happy New Year everyone!

The End Draws Near….

The end of the year that is! What? Did you think this post was going to be all about the end of the world? LOL. Honestly, I don’t believe all that mumbo jumbo about the end of the Mayan calendar being the end of the world! I DO however believe there is a shift coming, a shift in consciousness, a shift in the way people act, feel and think. I can feel it coming, the “Age of Aquarius”. It’s not something that will come on a specific DAY, it has been slowly coming over decades and will continue to slowly shift over the coming decades. Who REALLY knows the future anyway? Not I! I won’t claim any special knowledge, all I can really say is that I FEEL it. I FEEL the love growing, I FEEL the change in the air!

As far as my personal and professional life goes, there is a LOT of change coming. I have already experienced TONS of change in this past year and it will continue into 2013. I haven’t figured it all out just yet, but I promise to keep you all informed. I do have to apologize for the LONG gap in between posts this last month or so. Honestly, I cannot even remember the last time I wrote a blog post. It’s been way TOO LONG!

December is a crazy month for us this year. On top of Christmas and all the usual busyness that comes with the holidays, our oldest son is getting married on December 29th! We have agreed to help with a few things, which translates to, I am baking the wedding cake/s! Plus, we have some shopping to do for the groom and his best men (his two younger brothers) for the clothes they will be wearing for the wedding.

This week is busy because my husband and I are working on recording a Christmas song, “Silent Night”, to release in time for this Christmas. Our folk group, New Mexico Sunshine, is getting ready to play a show at our local main library for their “lunchtime at the library” series on 12/12/12 at 12:00 noon.

Also, I am offering 25% off ALL purchases in my Etsy shop until This Friday, Nov. 30th. Just enter the coupon code: cybermonday when you check out.

Needless to say, it’s going to be a crazy busy month! I hope to get back to some semblance of a normal routine after the New Year. If I don’t get back here before that, may you all have a Happy Holidays (no matter what holiday you celebrate) and a very happy New Year!

Thanksgiving etc.

original oil painting gratitude

Gratitude, 8 x 8" oil on canvas board, my newest painting created in the days before Thanksgiving 2011, SOLD

Thanksgiving is probably my favorite holiday. Gratitude. Thankfulness. Other than the idiocy that is Black Friday and a million and one stupid commercials on TV during the Thanksgiving football games, it is the only holiday that doesn’t have relations to the retail world. It is merely and beautifully all about being THANKFUL. The only problem with this idea is that I believe we should be thankful and grateful EVERYDAY. Gratitude and thankfulness are the secret to true happiness as far as I’m concerned. This has been my secret anyway. If you’ve never tried it, you really should. Next time you feel sad, irritated, angry, any negative feeling really, start thinking of the things you are grateful for. I guarantee you will feel better almost instantly.

Now that I’m done with my gratitude rant, I’ll share my Thanksgiving. Aaron and I spent the holiday and weekend with his parents. They own a cabin up in the mountain town of Cloudcroft, New Mexico. My mother in law’s father and brothers built the cabin many years ago and it’s stayed in the family since. Cloudcroft is a small town (pop. 850) high up in the mountains (elev. 9,000′ where the cabin sits at the top of the hill) just east of Alamogordo and White Sands. One of my favorite things about going up there is that we can get several inches of snow and COLD temps (lows in the teens). If you get tired of the cold, just drive 20 minutes down the mountain to Alamogordo and you won’t need more than a light sweatshirt. Beautiful New Mexico! Gotta love it!

This was the first Thanksgiving in a looooong time that all three of our sons were not with us. This was difficult for me, but apparently the boys were all fine. At least I will have two of the boys at home for Christmas!

Now, it’s back to work for the week. Still working on cleaning out my much smaller studio, listed 4 auctions on ebay this week and I will continue to post pieces in my Etsy shop, which by the way, has a sale going on currently. 20% off everything in my shop, just use the coupon code: CYBERSHOP. Hope to get back to some daily painting tomorrow too.

One of the things I am MOST grateful for is that I am blessed to be a full time artist and have many people who have purchased and supported my art over the years. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT! I hope everyone had a great weekend! Happy holiday season to all and to all a good night! 🙂
