Mural Sketch in Progress

The video above is the sketch for the mural I’m getting ready to start. This small 12 x 12″ painting is 1/10th the size the mural will be. It will be painted on an outside wall on the back patio. The people I’m painting it for have a very lovely garden yard and I am excited to see how my art will look among the trees and flowers. I picked Spring colors for that very reason. Then, even when it’s not Spring, they will be reminded of the yard when it’s in bloom! The idea is that the Sun mural will shine year round. I hope they like the design. πŸ™‚

Now that I’m all finished with the work for the NM Cancer Center Gallery show, I’m switching gears to start work on a mural job I’m very excited to get started! I do have another art show to get ready for, but that deadline is in July and I don’t have as many pieces to get together for it. However, I will be starting a new guitar painting for that show, very soon!

My art show in August is at the local Albuquerque Sierra Club offices. I’ve decided to make it a recycled art show, with the center piece being one of my guitar paintings. There will also be plenty of recycled vinyl record paintings too! πŸ™‚

Some Days I Just Push Through

New paintings on the wall and a halfway clean studio!

New paintings on the wall and a halfway clean studio!

Some days, being an artist is just plain painful. Why did I choose this occupation? What was I thinking?! Is it too late to give up and start a new career? Would I even be able to give it up? NO! I guess I’m stuck in this self imposed torture for the rest of my life. Don’t get me wrong, I’m so very grateful that I get to do what I LOVE! Painting is my true bliss! It’s all the other crap that goes along with it that makes it painful. I won’t go into all of that because I’m trying to turn myself around here and be, just BE positive and grateful. Success just seems to keep alluding me. Maybe I’m on the verge? Maybe tomorrow I will sell 20 paintings and all will be ok, right? Life is a journey and I can’t deny, I got on this train, no one forced me at gunpoint! No one to blame but myself. Days like today, I daydream of some mindless job I could do daily to pay the bills, then I remember the last “job” I had. That didn’t work out very well. Oh well. Meditate, pray, paint, wash, rinse and repeat! What else can I do? This is my life. I have some good art shows coming up! I have a new website! Things are looking up, right? Today, I have an interview with a fellow artist for a blog post she is going to write about me. I NEED to get back into a positive frame of mind. Nothing worse than being that pessimistic older artist telling the younger artist how wonderful it’s all been. She knows better than that, but still.

Alrighty then! Enough wallowing in self pity! Today I’m pushing through to get my paintings ready for the NMCCG show that hangs at the beginning of June. Hanging wires to be added, signatures on those paintings I forgot to sign, small details. Along with that, finishing painting an artist studio that just rented and will be moved in to on Saturday. Getting my studio ready for a Mandala painting class also on Saturday.

I guess writing all this stuff out helps! I feel better already. I guess I’d better get back to work. Hope you all are having a great day. Oh and the paintings in this blog are the last 3 I finished for the show that I teased about in my last post! I decided to go ahead and share them, just in case someone has their name on one of them! πŸ˜‰ (Always gotta work it ya know?!)

Yesterday was the deadline to get all of my information in for the show starting in June at the New Mexico Cancer Center Gallery. I ALMOST made it! lol! I did get everything in, except for photos of 3 paintings I still needed to finish up.

Two of the 3 were finished today, tomorrow I will get the last one completed. I’m going to give you just a little tease of the new images today, once I get the full photos taken I will share, or maybe I will wait until the show opens. We shall see! πŸ˜‰ See? A little tease!

My eldest son, Bryan, with my grandson, Ben

My eldest son, Bryan, with my grandson, Ben

I enjoyed my Mother’s day this past Sunday! I had my grandson for most of the day and my eldest son came by for a good visit in the afternoon. My mom, stepdad, two other sons and daughter-in-law came over for dinner later. It was a wonderful day! My grandson is almost 4 months old now and he’s currently teething. Poor little guy! Even so, he was quite happy and laughed and smiled with us all day!

Tornadoes and Timelapse!

We took a weekend trip out of town last weekend. It was so nice to get out of town for a few days! On our way back to Albuquerque there was a pretty big storm up north of us and as we drove further, I could see a little wisp of cloud coming down from the storm clouds. As we came closer, the little tail of a cloud turned into a full on funnel cloud! We stopped just off the hwy as we drove through Carrizozo to take photos and I was able to film a pretty decent video of the funnel cloud (tornado!).

I posted the video on instagram and was pleasantly surprised to get several requests from news channels, including The Weather Channel, to use my video on their broadcasts! I was pretty excited about it, but I didn’t expect it at all!

The NM Cancer Center Show is coming up quick! I have to get my images in by the 15th, so I only have time to finish up the paintings I’m currently working on. I took a short time lapse of one of the paintings today. Almost done!

Next up, I have to get busy painting for my show at the Sierra Club offices in August. Stay tuned for lots of works in progress and videos coming up. . .

Works in Progress…

I love it when I have a show coming up and I have a reason to paint EVERYDAY! I don’t always get to spend this much time painting. There is so much other work to do and it seems like I’ve spent the past few months working on my website. It was really only about a month of straight time working on the website, but that kind of work just drags SOOOOOO much! πŸ™‚ Good news is, I’m temporarily done with that and getting ready for showing my 20-25 paintings at the New Mexico Cancer Center Gallery. Did I mention before that 40% of all sales at this show are donated to their foundation which helps low income patients pay for their cancer treatment? I love that. I prefer my art supports great causes like this. My art is all about healing and love, what better way to contribute!

I have four canvases prepped to go, currently working back and forth on two of them. I have to admit, I’m a bit obsessed with circles right now. In the background, hundreds of little circles. It’s like a bunch of little bubbles, water or air, makes no difference. It’s very mesmerizing, painting all those little circles. It gets me into my “zone”.

I’m working on the same paintings I shared in my last blog post. One with a new color combo that I’m really falling in love with. Something about that sky blue makes me swoon. As I said in my last post, blue is NOT one of my favorite colors, but this blue is beautiful! It reminds me of the bright, blue New Mexico skies. It may become a new regular on my palette. Funny thing is, it’s been so long since I used this particular blue, that I can’t get the cap off the tube! I’m squeezing the paint out of a tiny hole in the body of the tube. Needless to say, I need to pick up a new tube of that color!

In other news, I’m having a special sale on my website for Mother’s Day! The sale ends this Friday, May 5th (gives me time to get everything shipped in time). Use the coupon code: Mom30 to get 30% off everything on my website. πŸ™‚

The Clock is Ticking….

20 x 20" oil on canvas, work in progress

20 x 20″ oil on canvas, work in progress

The deadline for the NMCCG show is fast approaching. I am working on having 25 pieces ready for the show and I’m currently right around 21. I ordered 4 new canvases last week and this week I’ve been busy covering canvas with black gesso. I started painting on Tuesday and have two paintings started now. I did a bit of research and found a fun new color combo. From my research, I found that a majority of both men and women call Blue their favorite color. I’m not one of those people, so I rarely use blue in my paintings. That changes with this batch of paintings. I love this combo (above) of bright sky blue with a light olive green and of course, ALL of my paintings start with yellow.

Purple and green happen to be my favorite colors and purple, green and yellow is a favorite combo of mine. Most of my paintings keep to a 3 color combination. I like odd numbers and I like to keep my palette simple. πŸ™‚

I may never paint another painting without the black gesso background. I just LOVE the way it makes the colors POP! They seem brighter on the dark background. I used to say I didn’t use black because it’s so dark and I want my art to be bright and light. I guess I should have tried putting it in the background a long time ago. The way the color pops on that dark background makes the color even brighter and lighter, IMHO anyway. πŸ™‚

In other news, I’m excited to report I may have found the PERFECT spot to teach painting classes! I’ve decided to start teaching a monthly mandala painting class. It will be one of those fun painting classes where you can have a glass of wine or a beer or even a cocktail while everyone paints. Usually, these classes teach everyone the same image, but my class will be about everyone creating their own version of the mandala. I will have more information about that very soon, still have to work out the details with the venue for the room rental and research the cost of materials, so I will know what I have to charge for the class. Stay tuned…

How I got my groove back!

oil painting on canvas

My current work in progress. 12 x 12″ oil on canvas. A suggestion from a facebook follower pointed me in a different direction.

I spent most of March and a couple days in April working on my brand new website! I have been researching and learning about artist websites for YEARS! This is the year I finally found the perfect website solution for my art. Art Store Fronts is amazing! They have all the tools I need to run an efficient website. Everything I’ve been learning about and had no idea how to actually implement, is built in to their awesome software. I highly recommend them. Needless to say, I NOW have a brand new artist website with everything! I invite you to go check it out and please let me know what you think! PaulaManningLewis.com is now LIVE! I have closed my Etsy shop and now have everything available for sale on the new site. Actually, I’m still working on getting EVERYTHING available. My current portfolio is all there, coloring books, dolls and older work is coming soon.

Now that the majority of website work is done, it’s back to painting in preparation for a show at the New Mexico Cancer Center Gallery starting in June and showing through August. I will have at least 20 pieces in the show! I also have a show coming up in August at the local Sierra Club offices. I have a LOT of painting to get done in the coming months! The painting above is my current work in progress, in a totally different direction. Instead of the sun or a flower, this one is focused on the Moon.

In addition to my paintings on canvas, I’m getting ready to start two different mural projects. I will share more about that in my Spring e-newsletter. Please visit my new website and sign up for my email list to receive the newsletter when it goes out soon.

This Saturday is ChromaFEST, an art and music festival and fundraiser for our local business, Chroma Studios. My band, Sunlight will be performing at 5:55pm-6:35pm. Also, my husband, Aaron Lewis, will play a solo guitar set as well right before Sunlight, starting at 5:30pm. Hope to see my local friends there! πŸ™‚

I’m still thinking about whether or not I will keep my blog here on WordPress or transfer it over to my new website. I may just link the two together. I’m super excited about taking my art to the next level! I feel like I finally found my groove again!
