What to do with old Vinyl?

Wall of records, 1 of 4!

Wall of records, 1 of 4!

For the love of God, don’t ever paint on a priceless vinyl record! Check that stuff out BEFORE you paint on a record worth lots of money! I don’t have to worry about that. I ONLY paint on records that I or anyone else for that matter should NEVER listen to ever again! lol. Seriously though. I have blogged before about my dad’s record collection. I inherited it 9 years ago when my dad passed away. There were originally over 40,000 vinyl disks. In the 9 years since the first move of records to our house, we have moved said records another 7-8 times, at least. Last year, we sold a big bulk of the collection. 30,000 45 single records. We didn’t get near what I would think they were worth, but they did take the ENTIRE 45 collection. It was quite the load off, seriously, those things are NOT light! They are bulky and heavy and only have two songs per record! We never listened to them. We like albums. We are now going through the albums (about 8,000) to see what we will listen to and what we will never listen to. Everything gets at least one full listen, unless it’s REALLY bad! There is always the GONG option if either Aaron or I feel the need to stop the torture. Long story short, THOSE are the records I paint on!

I’m currently working on a new vinyl record painting. Actually, I’m working on a group of them for my show at the Sierra Club in August. This one is getting very close to finished. Recycled art is my favorite. It’s guilt free. It’s a dilemma I face as an artist. I am very conscious of my carbon footprint on the planet. I do what I can. I make recycled art whenever I have the chance, from my recycled vinyl paintings, to recycled guitar art and painting over old paintings. I guess I overcompensate in my life by not having a lot of other stuff. I often joke that I could easily live in a tiny house, as long as my studio is separate and LARGE.

Some Days I Just Push Through

New paintings on the wall and a halfway clean studio!

New paintings on the wall and a halfway clean studio!

Some days, being an artist is just plain painful. Why did I choose this occupation? What was I thinking?! Is it too late to give up and start a new career? Would I even be able to give it up? NO! I guess I’m stuck in this self imposed torture for the rest of my life. Don’t get me wrong, I’m so very grateful that I get to do what I LOVE! Painting is my true bliss! It’s all the other crap that goes along with it that makes it painful. I won’t go into all of that because I’m trying to turn myself around here and be, just BE positive and grateful. Success just seems to keep alluding me. Maybe I’m on the verge? Maybe tomorrow I will sell 20 paintings and all will be ok, right? Life is a journey and I can’t deny, I got on this train, no one forced me at gunpoint! No one to blame but myself. Days like today, I daydream of some mindless job I could do daily to pay the bills, then I remember the last “job” I had. That didn’t work out very well. Oh well. Meditate, pray, paint, wash, rinse and repeat! What else can I do? This is my life. I have some good art shows coming up! I have a new website! Things are looking up, right? Today, I have an interview with a fellow artist for a blog post she is going to write about me. I NEED to get back into a positive frame of mind. Nothing worse than being that pessimistic older artist telling the younger artist how wonderful it’s all been. She knows better than that, but still.

Alrighty then! Enough wallowing in self pity! Today I’m pushing through to get my paintings ready for the NMCCG show that hangs at the beginning of June. Hanging wires to be added, signatures on those paintings I forgot to sign, small details. Along with that, finishing painting an artist studio that just rented and will be moved in to on Saturday. Getting my studio ready for a Mandala painting class also on Saturday.

I guess writing all this stuff out helps! I feel better already. I guess I’d better get back to work. Hope you all are having a great day. Oh and the paintings in this blog are the last 3 I finished for the show that I teased about in my last post! I decided to go ahead and share them, just in case someone has their name on one of them! πŸ˜‰ (Always gotta work it ya know?!)

Works in Progress…

I love it when I have a show coming up and I have a reason to paint EVERYDAY! I don’t always get to spend this much time painting. There is so much other work to do and it seems like I’ve spent the past few months working on my website. It was really only about a month of straight time working on the website, but that kind of work just drags SOOOOOO much! πŸ™‚ Good news is, I’m temporarily done with that and getting ready for showing my 20-25 paintings at the New Mexico Cancer Center Gallery. Did I mention before that 40% of all sales at this show are donated to their foundation which helps low income patients pay for their cancer treatment? I love that. I prefer my art supports great causes like this. My art is all about healing and love, what better way to contribute!

I have four canvases prepped to go, currently working back and forth on two of them. I have to admit, I’m a bit obsessed with circles right now. In the background, hundreds of little circles. It’s like a bunch of little bubbles, water or air, makes no difference. It’s very mesmerizing, painting all those little circles. It gets me into my “zone”.

I’m working on the same paintings I shared in my last blog post. One with a new color combo that I’m really falling in love with. Something about that sky blue makes me swoon. As I said in my last post, blue is NOT one of my favorite colors, but this blue is beautiful! It reminds me of the bright, blue New Mexico skies. It may become a new regular on my palette. Funny thing is, it’s been so long since I used this particular blue, that I can’t get the cap off the tube! I’m squeezing the paint out of a tiny hole in the body of the tube. Needless to say, I need to pick up a new tube of that color!

In other news, I’m having a special sale on my website for Mother’s Day! The sale ends this Friday, May 5th (gives me time to get everything shipped in time). Use the coupon code: Mom30 to get 30% off everything on my website. πŸ™‚

Still getting back in my groove!

oil painting in progress

Almost done with this one! πŸ™‚ 20 x 20″ oil on canvas, still thinking up a title for this one, any ideas?

I think I mentioned in a post last week that I was going to start blogging every Tuesday and Thursday…. Well, Tuesday slipped right by me this week! It’s not easy to go back to work after a long break, but when you are self-employed it can be even more difficult! Mainly because I have to have the self discipline to get my butt back in gear and back to a regular schedule! I have been in my studio everyday this week, but getting back to a routine is proving to be slightly difficult. I haven’t painted for so long, that’s ALL I want to do!

It doesn’t help that I’ve moved into yet another new studio! Smaller space and I’m sharing with an artist friend of mine. It’s been nice having someone to talk to while I work. Being an artist can be so isolating!

Other works in progress…

I waited until today to post a new blog so I could share some new works in progress! πŸ™‚ I currently have 4 paintings in progress. The photo above shows 3 of the 4, you will have to wait for the last one! πŸ˜‰ Stay tuned….

Creativity: Daisy Sunshine Hippie Girl Doll, DONE!

I worked on her for a few days, but she is finally done! My first Love doll made with my own custom art fabric. Daisy Sunshine was made using my Yellow Daisy fabric design.

She is just as I imagined her, I hope you love her too!

My next creativity project will be another painting! I must admit, I’ve missed my daily painting sessions. I also need to make more dolls, they are much more popular than I thought they could be. I’m so grateful to all the people who have adopted my sweet babies! It’s time for some new fabric designs as well. I have so much work to do, I guess I’d better get to it! Have a fantastic rest of your day! Please subscribe to my blog up in the upper right corner. Thank you! πŸ™‚

Creativity: Art Pillows Galore!

Pile of art pillows made by Paula Manning-Lewis

Pile of pillows currently in my studio and available for purchase!

Do you love soft things like I do? Then I have a sweet art pillow you may LOVE! I finished up a new heart pillow yesterday. It has stripes of green, yellow and red on one side and my daisy art fabric on the other side.

I really LOVE making these sweetheart pillows! They are the perfect size to take with you when traveling by car, bus, train or airplane. They make a great neck pillow! Plus, with a neck pillow like this, you will be the envy of your fellow travelers! Just fit the crook of the heart on the back of your neck. Perfect fit.

As with ALL of my pillow designs, you can have a custom pillow made, choosing your own favorite fabrics and colors. Contact me directly at plewis11@comcast.net for more information. Don’t forget, I also make “Memorial pillows” to help you remember your lost loved ones, using a favorite shirt or any piece of clothing.

I’m working on releasing some other fabric designs very soon. If you have any thoughts on any of my images you would love to see in fabric form, please let me know! I’m open to suggestions.

Next up, more peace sign pillows! Stay tuned or better yet, subscribe to my blog in the upper right hand corner of this page for automatic updates. Thank you so much for visiting my blog today! Have a glorious, love filled day!

Creativity: “Inner Love”

Today I finished the painting I started on Friday. As you can see from past paintings, purple, red and yellow is one of my favorite color combos. It feels regal to me. The contrast of the complementary colors, purple and yellow, with the red tossed into the mix, is like visual joy to me.

This is another “in spirit” or inspired painting, as it came to me in my Friday morning meditation. These are usually my best and most significant paintings. They are coming directly from my spiritual source. “I Am That, I Am”. Some people call it God. Whatever name you call it, it is the spiritual source from which we all come.

This painting is another piece in my “All About Love” series. I paint a lot about love because I truly believe it’s the one thing we need more of in this world. All you need is love!

Creativity: Daisy Art Pillow

This is the week of the special shape art pillow! I had a wild hair to make some different designs this week, so here’s number two. The spiral in the middle is hand embroidered. The custom art fabric is my own “Daisy” design. I’m really enjoying this design, it’s so bright and cheery. I plan to make the fabric available for sale very soon.

Until then, you can find this comfy, cute, Springlike art pillow in My Etsy Shop. Along with several other pillow designs.

As I’m getting back into posting regularly here on my blog, I’m looking for ideas. What would YOU like to see me blog about? So far, I’ve decided that Tuesdays and Thursdays will be “Creativity” day. In other words, on these days, I will post photos of what I’m working on during the current week.

As you can see from yesterday’s blog (and a couple of other previous posts), I’m currently working on a series of blog posts about my facebook addiction. I know I’m not the only one on the internet with this addiction! Follow my blog to see how I deal on a day to day basis. I’m using blogging as a replacement for all the time I USED to spend on facebook.

Another series I’m working on is “Living in the Land of Enchantment, New Mexico”. This is a series similar to one I wrote many years ago about different day trips about one hour outside of Albuquerque. The new series will be about many places my husband and I travel around the state. I love my state and I know many people come here to vacation, so I figured it could be helpful to people looking for something to do when they visit. I guess it could be helpful to people who live here too! Believe it or not, I’ve lived here most of my life and still have places to explore in this large land mass of a state!

Let me know in the comments if you have any other ideas you would like to see my blog about. I love getting feedback from YOU, my readers! Thank you for following my blog! πŸ™‚

Long time!

It’s been too long since my last post. Lots going on in my private life right now. Half of August we were gone on vacation. We visited the Pacific NW for the first time ever and we really liked it! It was a great trip and we visited some friends and some family. Met a few of my facebook friends that I had never met in person before, plus a college friend I hadn’t seen since 1999!

I’m back to work in my studio, mainly been working on getting my coloring books out in the world. Yesterday, I started on a new coloring page design. I’m having so much fun with these mandala drawings!

A couple of weeks ago, I was feeling down and in a dark place. For whatever reason, I decided that I should add some black paint to a few older paintings, just to see what they would look like. I really am happy with the outcome. I didn’t actually use black paint out of the tube, but mixed my own black with Ultramarine blue and Olive green. It’s on old artist trick to make the black more luminous.

I guess the main reason I haven’t posted here in so long is that I’m feeling like I’m at a turning point with my art and I’m not sure where it’s going next. I’m working on simplifying things, but with all the art I have piled up in my studio, that’s not an easy task. Stay tuned, I promise to keep you in the loop! πŸ™‚
